My $1,000,000 mistake got me a new client!
Everybody screws up sometimes.
I do, you do, the guy down the street does. Everyone does.
It’s how you handle your screw ups that makes all the difference between good and great.
Case in point - our phones and internet have been up and down since Saturday.
Yep, we’re goin’ on day 5 now!
Now that I’ve calmed down, I can see that our telecomm provider XO Communications is doing the best they can and they have been as responsive as possible.
In fact, I’d recommend them to others despite the problems because of how they are handling it.
I recently made a HUGE mistake and the way we handled it got us a new client referral.
A client’s husband died and she asked us to send in the paperwork for the life insurance claim.
2 weeks later she still hadn’t received the $1,000,000 she was waiting for. We couldn’t understand what happened and blamed it on the holidays.
Turns out the blame was ours. My assistant hadn’t realized she was supposed to send in the form and it was sitting in the file.
Oh no! That’s a $1,000,000 mistake!
I immediately took responsibility and we did everything we could to get the funds wired to my client’s account right away.
We had the funds to her within 3 days of discovering the error, I apologized personally and immediately, and sent her a gift certificate for a 1/2 day at a local spa to relieve her stress.
She sent me an email with so much gratitude and appreciation for how we handled the problem and then referred me a new client!
Now, I don’t recommend you make mistakes just so you can remedy them, but remember that each mistake is a learning experience and don’t stress out. Instead do this:
1. Take responsibility
2. Fix the mistake
3. Make your client whole +1 (that means you leave them better than before the mistake)
And, despite the error, your clients will love you more than ever for handling things in the best way possible.
